misUniverse is a band. misUniverse is the name of that
band. choose not to view the name misUniverse as something akin to subjective
beauty pageants; rather, at home in the same phylum as misunderstanding,
misconduct, misuse, misappropriation, or misfire.
misUniverse is the result of a songwriting collaboration that began years
ago - singer/composer Dim Gurevich and guitarist/producer
Kiyanu Kim met while attending New York University’s
music program; the two quickly became writing partners. As their shared
musical influences ranged from The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Bob Dylan to
J.S. Bach, Debussy, and Chopin, composing together became second nature.
Many songs, live shows, and various rhythm sections later, misUniverse released
their first full length recording, “All’s Well That
Ends.” A sonically complete, vividly textured album, this
collection of heartfelt songs showcased the band’s intelligent approach
to music, while hinging on sophisticated, thought-provoking lyrics.
In addition to the independent release of “All’s Well That Ends,”
the two kept busy with a number of high profile side projects. While Dim
worked with such names as Elektra Recording Artist Katell Keineg,
Kiyanu played with artists on both Maverick and Interscope Records, most
notably the famed singer Gwen Stefani. Through these projects,
misUniverse found its maturity and more importantly, the rest of its members.
Enter bassist James Cruz of the band Splender
(Columbia, J Records) and drummer Ian O’Neill, just
off playing for Maverick Recording Artist Ben Jelen. Because
of instant chemistry with Dim and Kiyanu, the band began rehearsing and
recording new material right away. The result was a definite progression
to the misUniverse sound, as Cruz and O’Neill brought an element of
urgency to the group’s music, while retaining the band’s signature
vibe. “I’ve found that there is infinite room to grow with this
band…at the core of misUniverse are the most sincere and honest songs
I’ve heard in a very long time…because of that I see no limits
to what we can do.” O’Neill said.
misUniverse is currently working with keyboardist Kevin Patrick
(Blondie, Portishead, Lucinda Williams), on new tracks
for an upcoming release, and are scheduled to begin performing live in
and around New York City this summer and fall. Find out more at www.misuniverse.net.
